I am writing to remind you that Congress controls the power of the purse and that the executive branch does not. Over the last year since President Trump took office, you’ve done nothing about his administration’s illegal impoundment of funds, demonstrating that you’re uninterested in pursing justice and the checks/balances our Constitution gives us. An emboldened President Trump has committed ten billion U.S. taxpayer dollars to his Board of Peace. Recall that he is the chair of this board and controls what will be done with this money.
President Trump demonstrates that he is severely out of touch with We The People when he said, “When you look at that compared to the cost of war, that’s two weeks of fighting, it’s a very small number. It sounds like a lot, but it’s a very small number,” (https://thehill.com/policy/international/5745297-trump-funding-board-of-peace/). He is creating a straw man and deflecting reason.
Where will these funds come from? The government is currently shut down due to budget disagreements — are you planning to attempt to include this additional ten billion in the current negotiations? Paired with the other ten billion dollars that President Trump is attempting to siphon from U.S. taxpayers by suing his own IRS, that is an unfathomable amount of money for a regular person.
If you agree with ten billion dollars for the Board of Peace, then do it the right way. It is your responsibility to insist that President Trump stop this illegal attempt at controlling the country’s purse strings.
