Dear Democratic Members of Congress,
Today we learned that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries met secretly with Jared Kushner to find “common ground.”
We have a message for every Democrat in Congress: there is no common ground with fascists. There is no common ground with an administration that has gassed senators, jailed journalists, fired veterans for telling the truth, locked children in cages, and used the Department of Justice as a personal weapon against its enemies.
Jared Kushner is not a moderate. He is not a dealmaker. He is the president’s son-in-law, a man who parlayed White House access into a $2 billion Saudi investment fund, who helped cover up the murder of a Washington Post journalist, and who now operates as an unofficial back channel for an administration that has declared war on the American people.
The Democratic base has marched in the millions. We have written thousands of letters. We have donated, organized, phone banked, and shown up — not so our leaders could sneak off to Manhattan apartments to make nice with the people dismantling our democracy.
We are ten weeks from the most important midterm election of our lifetimes. The American people are not looking for Democrats who will find common ground with authoritarians. They are looking for Democrats who will fight them.
If Hakeem Jeffries wants to meet with Jared Kushner, it should be across a table in a congressional hearing room, with cameras rolling and a subpoena in hand.
That is the only common ground we recognize.
Do not mistake our votes for permission to collaborate with the people destroying this country. We are watching. We will remember. And November is ten weeks away.
