Defend Section 504: Protect the Rights of People with Disabilities.
To: Dir. Gray
From: A constituent in Rock Springs, WY
July 5, 2025
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a vital law that protects the rights of people with disabilities by prohibiting discrimination and requiring reasonable accommodations in various settings, including schools and healthcare facilities. The lawsuit Texas v. Becerra, brought by 17 Republican state attorneys general, seeks to undermine or potentially eliminate these crucial protections. This would be a devastating blow to the disability community, eroding their hard-won rights and access to equal opportunities. The repercussions of weakening Section 504 would be far-reaching. Children with disabilities could lose access to the accommodations they need to receive a proper education, hindering their academic progress and future prospects. Adults with disabilities may face barriers in accessing healthcare and other essential services, compromising their well-being and quality of life. We must take a stand against this assault on the rights of people with disabilities. I urge you to take action by either withdrawing from the Texas v. Becerra lawsuit if your state is a plaintiff or by actively supporting the defense of Section 504 through signing on to support the defense or filing an amicus brief. Upholding the principles of inclusivity, equality, and human rights should be a priority for all elected officials. Protecting the rights of people with disabilities is not only a moral imperative but also a legal obligation. Section 504 has been a cornerstone of disability rights for five decades, and its erosion would be a step backwards for our society. I implore you to stand on the right side of history by defending this crucial law and ensuring that people with disabilities continue to have their rights safeguarded.
