The nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Secretary of Health and Human Services raises significant ethical concerns that senators must address. Kennedy's financial ties to the law firm Wisner Baum through a contingency fee arrangement create a clear conflict of interest. Even if he recuses himself from directly impacting the government, allowing a family member to benefit financially from his position is unacceptable. His refusal to recuse himself from matters related to the Gardasil vaccine, despite organizing litigation against its manufacturer Merck, demonstrates a lack of impartiality required for this critical role overseeing public health. Furthermore, Kennedy has spread dangerous misinformation about vaccine safety that contradicts established scientific consensus. Putting someone with such unscientific views in charge of agencies like the FDA and Medicare/Medicaid programs could undermine public trust and access to proven preventative care. His anti-vaccine activism through groups like Children's Health Defense also raises doubts about his ability to separate personal advocacy from policymaking responsibilities. For these reasons, I urge you not to confirm Kennedy's nomination. The American people deserve a Health Secretary committed to upholding the highest ethical standards and following evidence-based approaches to protecting public health and safety. Kennedy's financial entanglements, fringe views on vaccines, and record of activism make him unfit for this vital position overseeing over $3 trillion in healthcare spending and agencies that millions of lives depend on.
