Revoke reckless tariffs to protect economic stability.

The President's recent move to impose sweeping tariffs across global imports is reckless and damaging to the American economy. Experts warn these tariffs could trigger a recession or even a depression. Yet the President brushes off concerns about cratering markets, asserting an unfounded belief that the tariffs will lead to an unprecedented economic boom. This tariff scheme was executed under dubious claims of a national emergency over trade deficits, despite trade deficits not constituting an actual emergency by any reasonable standard. The legal basis for using emergency powers in this manner is tenuous at best and appears to be an abuse of presidential authority. Failing to act in the face of such economic brinkmanship would be an abdication of Congress's constitutional role. Left unchecked, these tariffs threaten to severely disrupt global trade, eliminate American jobs, raise consumer prices, and cripple economic growth -- all to satisfy the President's misguided beliefs about trade. Congress must move swiftly to terminate the emergency declaration underpinning these damaging tariffs. A resolution cancelling this factually unsupported emergency could earn bipartisan support and need only a simple majority in each chamber to take effect, should the President not veto it. Continued inaction risks validating this administration's willingness to inflict severe, self-defeating economic harm through unilateral overreach of authority.
