Oppose the DIRECT Act: Don't Gut IRS Enforcement to Fund Border Optics The DIRECT Act is a bad fiscal trade dressed up as border security. Vote no. This bill strips unobligated IRS enforcement funds — originally appropriated under the Inflation Reduction Act to audit wealthy individuals and corporations — and hands them to CBP with zero reporting requirements, no hiring benchmarks, and no timeline. Congress would be writing a blank check with no way to verify the money actually produces results. The CBO scored the IRS enforcement funding as a net revenue generator — meaning gutting it doesn't just cut spending, it forfeits future tax collections. We'd be trading proven fiscal returns for an indeterminate CBP appropriation that could end up far smaller than advertised if the IRS has already obligated much of the balance. That's not fiscal responsibility. That's robbing one agency that pays for itself to fund another with no accountability strings attached. Don't support it.
