An Open Letter

To: Sen. Booker, Rep. Watson Coleman, Sen. Kim

From: A verified voter in Somerset, NJ

November 9

I am writing as your constituent to urge you not to support reopening the government until there is a firm and enforceable commitment that Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies to the states are extended and protected. I understand that a government shutdown carries serious consequences, but this issue is too important to compromise. Millions of Americans rely on ACA support for access to healthcare, and any lapse or political bargaining over these subsidies would have devastating effects on families, communities, and the healthcare system as a whole. Frankly, I do not trust the current Republican leadership to uphold these protections without clear legislative guarantees. Too many attempts have been made to undermine or quietly dismantle the ACA, and we cannot allow the same tactics to succeed through backroom deals during budget negotiations. Please stand firm. Healthcare access is not a bargaining chip. The government should not reopen until the continuation of ACA subsidies is secured in writing and protected from partisan rollback.
