An Open Letter

Vote No on the SAVE Act - Protects No One, Disenfranchises Millions I urge you to vote no on the SAVE Act when it comes before the Senate this week. This legislation would effectively eliminate my right to vote and that of millions of other Americans who have done nothing wrong. Like nearly 80% of women in opposite-sex marriages according to Pew Research, I changed my surname when I married. The SAVE Act would require me to provide documentary proof of citizenship in person, but it explicitly does not accept marriage certificates or proof of name change as valid identification. My birth certificate shows a different name than my current legal name, creating an insurmountable barrier. This affects not just married women but millions of Americans who have changed names due to adoption, divorce, or other life circumstances. Beyond the name change issue, my husband and I rely on mail voting because we cannot physically get to our precinct or stand in line for hours. The SAVE Act would require us to send copies of photo identification with both our absentee ballot request and submission. Our signatures are inconsistent and illegible, which would likely trigger additional verification requirements we cannot meet. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stated that this bill would prevent more than 20 million legitimate voters, mainly lower-income people and people of color, from casting ballots. The Brennan Center for Justice confirms that people of color, low-income individuals, and married and divorced women would face the greatest challenges obtaining required documentation. Non-citizen voting is already illegal. We already provide Social Security numbers to register, and voter rolls are already matched to federal data. This legislation solves no actual problem while creating massive barriers for legitimate voters like me. The SAVE Act does not protect election integrity. It cancels the voting rights of millions of Americans who have followed every rule. I ask you to vote no and protect my constitutional right to participate in our democracy.
