Oppose DOJ Intervention in State Redistricting Processes

To: Sen. Curtis, Rep. Maloy, Sen. Lee

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

November 14

As a concerned citizen from Utah, I am writing to express my deep concern over the Department of Justice's recent intervention in California's congressional redistricting process. While this action does not directly affect my state, it sets a dangerous precedent that threatens the autonomy of all states in managing their electoral processes. The DOJ's involvement in California's voter-approved redistricting plan is a clear overreach of federal power. This intervention not only undermines the will of California's voters but also signals a troubling willingness by the federal government to interfere in state-level democratic processes nationwide. Such actions erode the fundamental principles of federalism upon which our nation was built. California's redistricting process was conducted through a transparent, voter-approved system designed to create fair representation. The DOJ's claim that this map violates the 14th Amendment and the Voting Rights Act appears to be a politically motivated attempt to manipulate electoral outcomes rather than a genuine concern for constitutional rights. This federal intervention is part of a larger, nationwide battle over redistricting. While some states have engaged in extreme gerrymandering, California's approach was driven by independent oversight and voter approval. The DOJ's actions seem to selectively target states based on political considerations rather than applying consistent, non-partisan standards. The implications of this case extend far beyond California's borders. If the federal government can arbitrarily intervene in one state's redistricting process, it sets a precedent that could be used to interfere in any state's electoral procedures, including those of Utah. This erosion of state sovereignty is a threat to our entire federal system. I urge you to speak out against this DOJ intervention and defend the right of all states to manage their electoral processes without undue federal interference. Please use your position to advocate for legislation that protects state autonomy in redistricting matters and prevents the weaponization of federal agencies for political purposes. The integrity of our democratic system depends on maintaining a proper balance between federal and state powers. We must resist this apparent abuse of federal authority and protect the rights of all states to conduct fair and independent redistricting processes.
