Feedback on voting reform in CT and a call to action to consider STAR voting

To: Gov. Lamont, Rep. Foster, Sen. Gordon

From: A constituent in Vernon Rockville, CT

September 21

I am a CT resident and a big advocate for voting reform. I believe our current system of First Past the Post is a significant hindrance on democracy and it is imperative that we work towards moving to something else. I watched an RCV working group meeting and am pleased to see that there is an effort dedicated to considering an alternative. However, I believe that there are significant issues specifically with RCV that did not come up in the meeting and should be considered before moving forward. RCV is a 100 year old voting system and we are very aware of the pros and cons of the method. Contrary to what was stated on the meeting: - RCV does not eliminate vote splitting - It does not always elect the majority-preferred candidate - The idea that your vote always goes to your next choice is also inaccurate RCV is also one of the more expensive voting systems to implement, tabulate, and is one of the more ballots susceptible to being voided due to voter error. I would like us to explore other methods that have demonstrated themselves to be easier and cheaper to implement while also yielding better results! One of those methods is STAR voting. I am able to point you towards some organizations working on this method. I would love to see a pilot of each method and let the differences speak for themselves.
