I’m writing from Las Vegas to express concern about recent cuts to food safety programs, including the FDA’s suspension of milk quality testing and the USDA’s elimination of key advisory committees. These actions significantly threaten public health and food supply safety.
As reported by Reuters, the FDA halted its dairy testing program due to workforce reductions, and nearly 20,000 HHS employees were cut. Meanwhile, the USDA disbanded advisory groups that guided meat, poultry, and microbial safety standards. In Nevada, over $8 million in USDA funds supporting school and food bank programs has been pulled—directly impacting local families and children.
Food safety should never be compromised. I urge you to:
1. Restore funding for FDA testing and USDA advisory committees.
2. Protect local food assistance programs from further cuts.
3. Support legislation prioritizing public health in our food system.
Your leadership is essential in reversing these dangerous decisions. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.
