Safeguard civil liberties, uphold due process for tax-exempt groups

To: Rep. Hern

From: A constituent in Tulsa, OK

November 19

This legislation raises grave concerns about potential overreach and abuse of power by the Treasury Secretary. Granting unilateral authority to investigate and terminate the tax-exempt status of organizations, including reputable institutions like universities and media outlets, based solely on accusations of wrongdoing sets a dangerous precedent. It undermines principles of due process, free speech, and the vital role of civil society in a democracy. Such unchecked powers risk stifling dissent, chilling free expression, and unfairly targeting organizations based on ideological differences rather than substantiated evidence. Even if well-intentioned, these provisions open the door to potential misuse by future administrations against critics or disfavored groups. I urge reconsideration of these overreaching provisions that jeopardize constitutional protections and democratic norms. Ensuring proper oversight, transparency and accountability mechanisms would better serve justice while safeguarding cherished civil liberties. Empowering any single authority with such sweeping discretion over civil society risks inflicting lasting damage to our pluralistic society.
