VOTE NO on H.R. 1

To: Rep. Wittman

From: A constituent in Williamsburg, VA

July 3

I am writing to you today about the Big Beautiful Bill. I find it necessary after I discovered that you voted yes on the first round in the House. You must be aware that this bill is extremely unpopular with the national public through a variety of reliable polls. There are far too many negatives in this bill for there to be any redeemable qualities. We cannot move forward with adding $4 trillion to the national debt — the most expensive bill ever seen in this nation’s history — or allowing 60% of the bill’s tax cuts to go to the top 20% wealthiest Americans. That isn’t providing for the constituents in your district. I don’t believe that whatever stipulations you asked to put on Medicaid or SNAP are enough to provide for your district, nor our nation as a whole, especially as that is a miniscule fraction of what this bill encompasses. I firmly believe a yes vote is a betrayal. Tens of millions of Americans will lose their healthcare, which will result in illness and death. This will happen in your district, whether you believe it or not. Rural hospitals will be forced to shut down due to decreased financial assistance, budget cuts, decreased staffing, etc. In some places, Planned Parenthood (which also performs cancer screenings and other essential services) is the only healthcare option. In this bill, Planned Parenthood is specifically targeted. That isn’t providing for the constituents in your district, but targeting them. As a human, how can you allow this legislation to pass? Americans deserve better. I don’t disagree that Medicaid/Medicare needs reform, but I don’t believe a 940 page bill is the right way to go about it. Healthcare needs to be resolved in its own bill, with time and consideration for all those affected. We were once promised that if we went to school we could make something of ourselves and have a bright future, but in this bill it seems students and their parents will be faced with much greater difficulty getting loan assistance, which will lead to fewer graduates, a society with lower overall intelligence, and more of the population in debt that dramatically undermines their ability to contribute to our economy. Meanwhile, those born into higher income households will have no issue, and between these financial burdens on the majority and tax cuts for top wealth-holders, the class disparity will only increase.  Reading through the statement you released following your yes vote in the preliminary round, you received at least some backlash previously, so you have some idea how important and vital this is to the people in this community. In this return of the bill to the House, you have a second chance. Please, do the right thing this time. VOTE NO on the Big Beautiful Bill. Your constituents are depending on you. I am depending on you.
