End the Inhumane Deportation of Sick Children

To: Sen. Warner, Sen. Kaine, Rep. Wittman

From: A constituent in Midlothian, VA

March 15

The recent deportation of a 10-year-old U.S. citizen battling brain cancer, along with her family, is a direct result of the current administration’s escalated immigration enforcement policies. This child was en route to Houston for critical medical treatment when her family was detained at an ICE checkpoint and subsequently deported to Mexico, disrupting her essential healthcare. Under President Trump’s intensified immigration agenda, ICE has reported a 627% increase in arrests, aiming for mass deportations without adequate consideration of individual circumstances. This aggressive approach has led to the highest number of deportations since 2014, with over 270,000 individuals removed in a recent 12-month period. These policies have instilled widespread fear among immigrant communities, particularly affecting families with mixed immigration status. The deportation of a gravely ill child underscores the urgent need for legislative action to protect vulnerable citizens from such inhumane practices. We demand that you: 1. Intervene Immediately: Ensure the safe return of this child and her family to the United States for necessary medical treatment. 2. Enact Protective Legislation: Develop laws that prevent the deportation of family members of U.S. citizens, especially when critical health issues are involved. 3. Hold Agencies Accountable: Conduct thorough investigations into ICE’s enforcement actions to prevent future injustices. Your decisive action is imperative to uphold the values of compassion and justice. Stand up and fight against these inhumane policies now.
