An Open Letter
To: Sen. Lee
From: A verified voter in Salt Lake City, UT
October 16
I'm a constituent in Murray, and I'm writing to condemn the amicus brief you and Senator Cruz filed this week urging the Supreme Court to take up John Eastman's disbarment.
John Eastman wasn't disciplined for unpopular opinions. California found he advanced false claims and helped drive a scheme to block the certification of a lawful election. Stripping his license was the legal profession protecting the public and the courts, exactly what it exists to do. Calling that "barfare" tells every lawyer that lying to courts in service of power is just political speech.
What troubles me most is that you know better. In January 2021 you rejected Eastman's six-point plan, and you voted to certify the results. That was the right call. But your own texts with Mark Meadows show you promoted Eastman's research weeks earlier. Now, instead of putting that chapter behind you, you're lending the weight of a U.S. Senate seat to rehabilitating the man who wrote the playbook.
Utahns expect our senior senator to defend the peaceful transfer of power, not the reputations of those who tried to undo it. I ask you to withdraw your support for this brief and to publicly affirm that the 2020 election was legitimate.
