RE: Stand Against Politicizing the Military I am writing as a constituent who has always respected your service in the Marine Corps and your steady work for Alaskans, particularly in supporting our service members and strengthening our fishing industry. You understand, better than most, what it means to swear an oath to defend the Constitution — not a political party, not a president, but our country and its people. That is why I am deeply alarmed by President Trump’s recent speech at Quantico, where he told hundreds of senior generals and admirals that it is time to fight a “war from within” against American cities. To frame fellow Americans as an “enemy within” and to direct the military to prepare for action against them undermines everything that makes our democracy strong. Defense Secretary Hegseth’s rhetoric about rebranding himself as “Secretary of War,” coupled with his disdain for diversity and inclusion in the armed forces, only heightens the danger of politicizing our military. Officers serve with honor across political lines, and they should not be pressured into carrying out partisan agendas. As an Alaskan, I know how important the military is to our state and how much respect Alaskans hold for those in uniform. We rely on their presence for security in the Arctic, for support in disaster response, and for the stability of our local communities. To see them used as pawns in a political fight is unacceptable. Senator, you have consistently stood up for service members and for Alaska. At this moment, I urge you to stand up again—clearly and publicly—against any attempt to use the military to police American citizens or to treat our communities as a battlefield. The people of Alaska, and the nation, need to hear you defend the principle that the U.S. military is not a tool for domestic political warfare.
