Please take action to end the war in Iran
To: Sen. Budd
From: A constituent in Knightdale, NC
May 5
First, I DO NOT SUPPORT THIS WAR.
Second, the 60-day War Powers deadline passed May 1. The administration claims a ceasefire pauses the clock, but we know that is factually untrue. Section 5(b) of the law enumerates exactly three conditions under which the 60-day requirement does not apply: a declaration of war, specific congressional authorization, or Congress being physically unable to meet. A ceasefire is not among them. There are no other exceptions.
Furthermore, just yesterday U.S. forces engaged Iranian vessels, and Iran struck the UAE with missiles and drones the same day. This is clearly not a concluded conflict.
Beyond the legal question, the administration has not only repeatedly mischaracterized this conflict but also failed to adequately clarify its strategic objectives. Congress cannot fulfill its constitutional role by accepting the executive’s inconsistent and false accounts at face value.
The War Powers Resolution exists precisely to ensure independent oversight, regardless of which party holds the presidency. When the executive misrepresents the law, congressional oversight is not optional - it is required.
Please support a formal AUMF vote and preferably one that ends this conflict as soon as possible.
