More Than Words: We Need Action, Not Just Speeches and Solicitations

To: Sen. Booker

From: A verified voter in Maplewood, NJ

April 17

I want to begin by thanking you for your recent floor speech. In a time of mounting constitutional crisis and democratic erosion in the United States, hearing your voice publicly call out the dangerous normalization of authoritarian rhetoric was heartening. But I am writing to tell you - and urge you - that it is not enough. The stakes are now too high for speeches alone. We need action. We need organization. We need leadership that doesn't just ask for donations, but gives people a mission. Many of us across the country are ready to fight for our democracy, for truth, for justice - but we need more than campaign emails and vague appeals. We need structure. Strategy. Courage. Where is the organized resistance from the Democratic Party? Why aren't we seeing: The formation of independent, civilian-powered investigative coalitions to document and expose corruption and abuses? Calls to join the International Criminal Court in condemning human rights violations and democratic backsliding, both at home and abroad? National efforts to educate the public on their rights and resistance tactics, so Americans are not caught unprepared? Partnerships with international media and watchdogs to counter propaganda and disinformation? The creation of a secure digital safe haven for whistleblowers and defectors who are trying to expose wrongdoing? Serious analysis of historical democratic collapses and comebacks, and the implementation of the lessons they offer? These are not fringe ideas. They are the bare minimum for democratic survival in the face of accelerating authoritarian tactics. Instead, many in the Democratic establishment seem paralyzed - or worse, indifferent - to the gravity of the moment. That has to change. Finally, I must also express my deep disappointment in your vote regarding military aid to Israel. The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza demands moral clarity and political courage. Continuing to fund these operations without condition, while credible reports of human rights abuses persist, is indefensible. I urge you to change course and use your position to insist on an immediate halt to all military aid until international human rights standards are met. Please understand that I write this not in cynicism, but in hope. Hope that you, among others, will rise to this moment. Hope that we can still preserve and rebuild a nation where truth matters, justice prevails, and democracy is not merely a slogan but a living reality. We are ready to help. But we need leaders who will fight with us - not just speak at us. Please, be one of those leaders.
