Condemn Trump’s Attacks on the Federal Reserve and Rule of Law
To: Rep. Rouzer, Sen. Tillis, Sen. Budd
From: A verified voter in Wilmington, NC
January 12
I am writing as a North Carolina constituent to urge you—clearly and publicly—to condemn Donald Trump’s baseless attacks and manufactured “charges” targeting Chairman Jerome Powell and the Federal Reserve. This is not normal oversight. This is political intimidation aimed at undermining the independence of a central bank in order to bend the U.S. economy to one man’s personal interests. It is authoritarian behavior, and it is dangerous. An independent Federal Reserve is not a partisan preference—it is a cornerstone of economic credibility and stability. Threatening criminal charges against the Chair of the Fed because you dislike monetary policy is not governance. It is coercion. It is the kind of practice we condemn in illiberal regimes, and it has no place in a constitutional democracy. This is particularly alarming given the broader pattern of lawlessness and corruption we are watching in real time—including the administration’s apparent disregard for norms, procurement rules, and lawful congressional oversight when it comes to the ongoing renovation activity at the White House. When a President treats laws, institutions, and oversight as optional, the result is always the same: chaos, corruption, and instability—followed by blame placed everywhere except where it belongs. This moment requires courage and clarity from elected officials. Senator Tillis: I want to acknowledge that you have finally been willing to speak more truthfully now that you are no longer facing reelection pressure. I’m asking you to take the next step and state publicly—without hedging—that these attacks on the Fed are illegitimate, reckless, and un-American. Senator Budd and Congressman Rouzer: I am asking you directly to do the same. Your silence is not neutral—it is consent. If you believe in markets, fiscal responsibility, the rule of law, or the Constitution, then you cannot selectively defend those principles only when it’s convenient. The United States does not belong to a President. The Federal Reserve does not exist to serve a politician. And the Constitution is not a prop. History does not remember who stayed quiet to protect their career. It remembers who defended institutions when they were under attack. Please issue a public statement condemning Trump’s political intimidation campaign against Chairman Powell and the Federal Reserve, and support any congressional actions necessary to safeguard the Fed’s independence and prevent further abuse of power.
