Follow-Up: Request for Congressional Oversight of ICE Conduct in Minneapolis
To: Rep. Dunn, Sen. Moody, Sen. Scott
From: A constituent in Tallahassee, FL
January 19
I am writing to follow up on my recent message regarding concerns about ICE enforcement actions and use of force in civilian communities.
Since my last email, the Associated Press has published additional reporting on the events in Minneapolis, including the exposure of a family with young children—one just six months old—to tear gas and flash-bang devices during federal immigration enforcement activity in a residential neighborhood.
The facts described in this reporting raise serious questions about the scope of ICE’s authority, the use of crowd-control tactics in residential areas, and the safeguards in place to protect bystanders—particularly children and families who are not involved in any enforcement action.
I respectfully urge you to use your oversight authority to:
* Request formal briefings and documentation from DHS and ICE regarding the use of force and crowd-control measures in Minneapolis
* Support or encourage hearings by the appropriate committees to examine federal law enforcement conduct in civilian neighborhoods
* Determine whether existing policies, training, and accountability mechanisms are sufficient, and whether legislative action is needed
Congressional oversight is essential to ensure that federal agencies operate within the law and that public safety measures do not result in harm to innocent people in their own homes and neighborhoods.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I would appreciate any information you can share about steps you are taking or considering in response.
