The proposed SAVE Act threatens to disenfranchise millions of eligible voters nationwide, disproportionately impacting women, communities of color, low-income individuals, and those living in rural areas, including citizens of Idaho. Requiring voters to provide documentation in person to register or update their registration is an unnecessary barrier that would effectively eliminate mail-in voter registration and registration drives across the country. Nearly 9% of voting-age Black Americans and 11% of Americans of color lack ready access to citizenship documents like birth certificates and passports. Additionally, up to 69 million women who have changed their names do not have a birth certificate matching their current legal name. In states like Kansas where similar laws were implemented, over 31,000 voters were blocked from registering, with the burden falling heavily on people of color and the elderly. This act perpetuates false claims of widespread voter fraud to justify restricting access to the ballot box and maintaining political power at the expense of underrepresented communities. Voting is a fundamental right in a democracy. Rather than erecting discriminatory barriers, efforts should focus on ensuring all eligible citizens can exercise their constitutional right to vote freely and fairly. The SAVE Act runs counter to strengthening American democracy and should be firmly opposed. Urge Idaho congressmen to vote no on this act.
