As a Navy veteran, I expect Congress to correct the concerning events at Fort Bragg where soldiers openly cheered and participated in partisan political attacks, representing a violation of long-standing military principles regarding political neutrality and non-partisanship. The military leadership's apparent complicity in curating the crowd and allowing the sale of overtly partisan merchandise on the base raises serious questions about adherence to regulations separating the military from domestic politics. As a non-partisan institution, the military must remain strictly apolitical to preserve public trust and stability. Failure to uphold these norms erodes civilian control of the military and undermines the bedrock values the armed forces are sworn to protect. It is imperative that military leaders reaffirm the military's commitment to political neutrality, hold accountable any violations, and take clear steps to prevent further erosion of this fundamental principle. The actions at Fort Bragg represent an unacceptable departure from ethical norms that have properly insulated the U.S. military from partisan division for decades. Decisive leadership is needed to realign the military's conduct with its sacred obligation to remain outside the political arena and focused solely on defending the Constitution. Restoring these boundaries is critical for preserving good order, discipline and public faith in the apolitical nature of the armed forces.
