Urgent Action Needed to Protect Public Forests from Destructive Logging

To: Rep. Pallone, Sen. Kim, Sen. Booker

From: A constituent in Little Silver, NJ

April 12

I am writing to express my deep concern over recent executive actions that threaten our nation’s public forests. As reported by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the Trump administration has issued executive orders that would dramatically expand logging on public lands under the guise of wildfire prevention—despite overwhelming evidence that such measures harm ecosystems, worsen climate change, and fail to reduce fire risks effectively. Scientific research consistently shows that industrial logging, especially in mature and old-growth forests, destroys critical wildlife habitats, increases carbon emissions, and disrupts natural fire resilience. Instead of protecting communities from wildfires, these policies prioritize commercial timber interests over long-term forest health and the public good. I urge you to: 1. **Oppose these destructive executive orders** and any legislation that promotes large-scale logging on public lands. 2. **Support science-based forest management** that prioritizes ecological health, community wildfire preparedness (such as home hardening and defensible space), and protections for carbon-rich forests. 3. **Advocate for the conservation of public lands** by strengthening safeguards against exploitation and ensuring transparency in decision-making. Our forests are vital to combating climate change, preserving biodiversity, and safeguarding clean water and air for future generations. I ask that you take immediate action to halt this reckless expansion of logging and instead champion policies that truly protect both people and ecosystems. Thank you for your attention to this critical issue. I look forward to your response and hope you will use your position to defend our public lands.
