Protect Our Democracy: Uphold the Rule of Law
To: Rep. Moore
From: A constituent in Charlotte, NC
January 25
I’m writing to you because I am extremely upset by the President’s recent decision to fire the Inspectors General. It was the final straw in a week full of dangerous and irresponsible decisions being made by the new administration. This action is a direct assault on the checks and balances vital to our democracy. The President and those in his administration are eroding the very foundation of our government, and I refuse to remain silent. Our nation was founded on the principle that no one is above the law. The founding fathers carefully designed a government with three equal branches to prevent the kind of power consolidation we’re witnessing today. Congress’s critical role in checking the executive branch has never been more important. I understand it isn’t easy to stand up to this President. The potential political consequences might seem daunting, but that is precisely why we need you to act. The U.S. House of Representatives are there to represent the people of the United States of America. That is why it is called the ‘People’s House’. We didn’t elect you to cater to the wealthy elite or rubber stamp everything the President wants. We elected you to represent us—the American people. This isn’t about politics. It’s about whether we remain a government of, by, and for the people. Many who voted for the President, and you believed you both would work to make their lives better. Instead, we’ve seen executive orders that undermine democracy, by eroding Truth, Transparency, Law and Order, in ways that harm working families. It is appalling to watch, and I know you see it too. Loyalty to the President is being prioritized over allegiance to the Constitution and the well-being of the American people. These moves are not making America stronger, they are weakening us. They diminish our influence in the world and damage trust in the United States, both at home and abroad. The people will be left to struggle under the weight of increasing challenges. The harm these policies will inflict on our most vulnerable, including disabled veterans, is especially heartbreaking. My father-in-law fought in World War II. He escaped a Nazi labor camp, found refuge with an American troop, and fought alongside them to earn his freedom. He earned a Purple Heart and eventually became an American citizen with the sponsorship of those soldiers. Yet he always remained skeptical of government, shaped by his life experiences. If he were alive today, he would be devastated to see what is happening to this country. His children now ask, “What did he fight for if we’re just going to hand it back to those we once stood against?” This is not the time for partisan rubber-stamping. If you cannot fulfill your duty to uphold your oath to protect the United States by holding the President and his administration accountable to act within the law then I urge you to step aside so that someone else can uphold the oath of office.
