I am writing to urge you to take immediate and unequivocal action to protect the privacy of transgender youth by ensuring that their medical records remain confidential under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
No political regime, administration, or governing body has the right to intrude upon the private medical histories of any American — especially our children.
Recent efforts by some state and federal actors to access or weaponize the personal medical information of transgender minors are deeply alarming. These actions are not only cruel and invasive but represent a dangerous overreach that violates the principles of medical privacy and bodily autonomy. HIPAA was established to safeguard precisely this kind of sensitive information from political exploitation or public exposure.
Trans youth and their families deserve to receive necessary and evidence-based medical care in safety, guided by trusted healthcare professionals, not threatened by ideologically motivated interference. Stripping away privacy protections would not only endanger the health and well-being of these young people but also set a dangerous precedent for government intrusion into the private healthcare decisions of all Americans.
Congress must stand firm in defending HIPAA’s original intent and resist any efforts — overt or covert — to undermine the medical privacy of transgender individuals. I urge you to enact or support legislation that explicitly affirms that medical records, including those related to gender-affirming care, are protected from political scrutiny and abuse.
This is not a matter of partisanship — it is a matter of human dignity, civil rights, and constitutional privacy. Protect our kids. Protect our values. Uphold HIPAA.
