Limit ICE and hold them accountable
To: Rep. Gilchrist, Sen. Coleman, Gov. Polis
From: A constituent in Denver, CO
January 24
“GIVE ME YOUR TIRED, YOUR POOR, YOUR HUDDLED MASSES YEARNING TO BREATHE FREE” It has been a full year since ICE policies and methods changed from something somewhat civilized and based in legal standing. This federal administration has not only pardoned hundreds of violent criminals, but then hired some of these individuals into ICE with the purpose of lawless deportations and brutal tactics upon those who need protection the most. The often repeated “worst of the worst” has not led these goons into gang territory, but instead they are abducting children, lurking in court houses and detaining legal migrants, citizens, Native Americans, veterans…etc. Now we have had 2 citizens murdered in Minnesota this month while acting in ways that should be protected by our constitutional rights. Colorado deserves to have serious protections and accountability expectations in place to support our federal, state and city rights. As a “purple” state that has found ill favor with the federal administration, there is a valid argument that Colorado will be a coming target to the ICE occupation and terror. Please see California’s SB 627 (no masked agents), AB 49 (school and hospital protections) and AB 688 (courthouse arrest ban). Governor Pritzker of Illinois (followed by Chicago City Council) directed that J6 rioters will not be hired. Also currently proposed are Maryland’s” ICE breaker act of 2026” and Washington’s “ICE Out Act of 2026” (HB 2641) preventing the hiring of these individuals. I would like to request that the Colorado legislature immediately look into legislating the following: 1 Colorado will bar ICE agents hired under Trump or with J6 charges (pardoned or not) from any state job, but especially law enforcement roles. 2 All law enforcement (in the scope of their duties) be unmasked (outside of possible documented medical issues that require a medical grade mask) at all times and have adequate identification visible. 3 Limit ICE activity in protected spaces such as schools, hospitals, churches and courthouses to those with valid JUDICIAL warrants. 4 Legislate that ALL law enforcement are legally liable for their actions on the job. Federal agents need to be held to Colorado law while on our soil. All investigations of federal actions in the state of Colorado WILL include the local authorities and will be held to our standards. Federal agents found to violate the law should be liable for civil damages.
