Upholding civil liberties, rejecting HR 9495's overreach

To: Rep. Ivey

November 22

Thank you for voting against HR 9495, the Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act. This bill poses a grave threat to civil liberties and nonprofit organizations across the country. By allowing the Treasury Secretary to unilaterally revoke the tax-exempt status of any nonprofit deemed a "terrorism-supporting organization" without due process, this legislation opens the door to abuse of power and politically-motivated targeting of groups based on their views or advocacy work. Civil society organizations, including the ACLU, Council on Foundations, and many others have strongly condemned this bill for granting the executive branch unchecked authority to silence dissent and dismantle nonprofits at will. Your vote to uphold constitutional protections and preserve the vital role of nonprofits in our democracy is appreciated. I urge you to continue resisting any attempts to undermine free speech and the fundamental rights enshrined in the First Amendment.
