End Time changes

To: Gov. Dunleavy

From: A constituent in Anchorage, AK

June 28

Dear governor, What time should it be in Alaska? Will Alaskans be able to ever stop changing our Clocks twice a year? As our governor you still have the opportunity to choose the time for Alaskans and you have the opportunity to push the Alaska state legislature to ditch the twice a year switch.  Alaskans are looking for a governor willing to make a push to end the twice a year costly event of changing the clocks. Alaskans are spending millions of dollars twice a year just to adjust their clocks by one hour. It is unnecessary, unpopular and is no longer necessary for Alaskans. Today I am urging you to lock the clocks here in Alaska.  Each year Alaskans and Alaskan families across the state have to adjust their clocks twice a year which disrupts sleep, commerce, transportation scheduling, the tourism industry and school schedules. It is also costing Alaskans and the State of Alaska millions of dollars each year just to change the clocks by one hour.  Unless Congress act to lock the Clocks on Daylight Saving time Alaskans are set to once again set the clocks back on Sunday November 1st, 2026 and forward again on March 14th, 2027. But the question is when will Alaskans see the final time change? The Twice a year time changes of the Clocks are out dated and are no longer needed. But every year the debate on where to lock the clocks here in Alaska continue. Some Alaskans want year round Alaska standard time. Some don’t care what time we chose to make permanent, while others just want the current system to remain. A majority of Alaskans Want year round Daylight Saving time and or Pacific Standard time. But the only problem is in order for the State to observe Year Round Daylight saving time an act form Congress is needed meaning Congress must approve of year Round Daylight saving time. If the State of Alaska wants to switch time zones to Observe year Round Pacific Standard time Approval from the United States Department of Transportation is needed in order for Alaska to move to the Pacific time zone.  Each year many Alaskans ask when will we lock the clocks? Hawaii and Arizona have long benefited from year Round Standard time. Critics for year round standard time argue that standard time is more in line with solar time while a majority of Alaskans argue that Daylight Saving time and or Pacific Standard Time here in Alaska would reduce Energy, crimes, car crashes and even allow Alaskans to enjoy an extra hour of evening sunlight during the long winter months for commerce, recreational and family activities. The tourism industry, banking industry, insurance industry and the oil industry all support making Daylight saving time and or Pacific Standard time permanent here in Alaska because it keeps us closer in line to Wall Street. Many Alaskan businesses also support making Daylight saving time and or Pacific standard time permanent here in Alaska because it keeps us closer in line with Wall Street.  Alaskans in support of permanent Daylight Saving time and or Pacific Standard Time argue that it would allow Alaskan families to get off of work and school when it is still daylight outside during the long winter months. For Alaskans and Alaskan families the current twice a year time change system is harmful to the public health. The day after daylight savings time when we fall back to Alaska standard time, you always see a spike in, heart attacks, strokes, depression and a spike in, car accidents. There is also misbehavior at schools. Changing the clocks is just not a good system that we have now and it will never be a good time system for Alaskans and Alaskan Families.  Daylight savings time and or Pacific standard time would also keep Alaska one hour behind our neighbors in Canadas Yukon Territory. This would prevent confusion on what time it is when travelers hit the border.  But the question on where to lock the clocks here in Alaska continues. This year a bill nearly passed that would have locked the clocks on Pacific Standard time here in Alaska if the USDOT approved but the house Finance committee and the full house failed to act on the bill. What could have gotten done this year will now have to be reintroduced next year if congress doesn’t act.  Alaskans need certainty and a more streamlined schedule and time system. It is past overdue that we join in with Hawaii and Arizona by locking our clocks. If we lock our clocks other states may soon follow but that requires us to act.  As our governor you have the opportunity to speak in front of many Alaskans showing your support in locking the clocks here in Alaska. We need a governor who is willing to give the Alaskan legislatures a push on where to lock the clocks even if a special session needs to be held at the end of every legislative session to allow the legislature to focus on locking the clocks here in Alaska.  Locking the clocks should be a priority next year and should be a heavy topic of discussion next year. It is past time for Alaskans to quit changing the clocks twice a year and it is time to remain on one time year round. Just like many, Alaskans are tired of changing the clocks twice a year.  The Twice a year time changes are very costly and are costing Alaskans millions of dollars each year. Alaskans and several businesses have to rent equipment and hire people just to adjust their clocks by one hour throughout their entire buildings twice a year. Cities, Municipalities, towns and Boroughs all have to rent equipment to adjust the clock on their clock towers and other exterior clocks. Alaskans could save thousands of dollars each year by remaining on one time year round.  By remaining on one time year round Alaskans would not have to change their clocks or nothing. They could remain on one time year round and never have to worry about changing the clocks. Again I am urging you as our potential governor to lock the clocks next year. It is time for Alaskans to quit changing their clocks twice a year.  Here are a few links: https://www.savesunshine.org/about-1 https://www.savesunshine.org/debunking https://www.savesunshine.org/#anchors-lfphly0n5 https://www.chronicleonline.com/opinion/columnists/point-time-changes-have-advantages-year-round/article_6b5f843d-c064-56ee-910c-863c01071d87.html https://medicalxpress.com/news/2026-03-scrap-daylight.html https://www.discovermagazine.com/u-s-public-reaction-to-daylight-saving-time-turns-sharply-negative-in-the-fall-48780 https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-surprising-science-behind-why-daylight-saving-time-is-good-for-wildlife/ https://www.aip.org › inside-science › daylight-saving-timeDaylight Saving Time Could Benefit Animals - AIP.ORG https://magazine.outdoornebraska.gov › blogs › nebraskaHow Daylight Saving Time Affects Wildlife | Nebraskaland Magazine If we can’t get this done then who will? Nobody has come this close to locking the clocks since Hawaii and Arizona locked their clocks several years ago. I am urging you to support ending the twice a year time changes and I am urging you to speak out showing your support in locking the clocks here in Alaska.  Who knows you could gain more votes this fall if you are willing to address this topic. It is time to give Alaskans more certainty and that starts by locking the clocks. Again please give the legislature a push to lock the clocks. I look forward to hearing back from you.  Thanks, Kai Ivey
