Defend Congressional oversight of DHS immigration facilities

To: Rep. Maloy, Sen. Curtis, Sen. Lee

From: A constituent in Saint George, UT

May 14

As elected representatives of the people, members of Congress have a legal right and duty to conduct oversight of federal agencies and facilities. The actions taken by the Department of Homeland Security to physically block and detain lawmakers lawfully visiting the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Newark are an unacceptable violation of congressional oversight authority. Under federal law, Congress is explicitly permitted to enter DHS detention centers without prior notice for oversight purposes. Denying this access and accusing lawmakers of illegally "storming" the facility is a disturbing overreach that undermines the system of checks and balances. I urge you to defend Congress' constitutional oversight role, rebuke DHS for this unjustified escalation, and take steps to ensure such obstructionist behavior does not reoccur. Safeguarding this crucial oversight function is vital to preventing abuses of power and upholding democratic accountability.
