Reassert congressional authority over trade, end unlawful tariffs

To: Rep. Simpson, Sen. Risch, Sen. Crapo

From: A constituent in Ketchum, ID

April 5

The recent tariffs imposed by the president under the guise of a national economic emergency are a blatant abuse of power and an unconstitutional overreach. Congress must act swiftly to reclaim its authority over trade policy by passing bipartisan legislation like the Trade Review Act of 2025. These nonsensical tariffs, based on faulty calculations, are already causing immense economic turmoil - stock market losses, fears of recession, and anticipated price hikes as businesses aim to offset the new import taxes. Beyond the economic toll, the president is setting a dangerous precedent by exploiting emergency powers to bypass Congress and enact sweeping domestic policies. This brazen power grab cannot be allowed to stand. Immediate action must be taken to rein in this unlawful executive overreach and restore the proper balance of powers before further damage is inflicted on the nation's economy and democratic institutions.
