Don’t Terminate TPS for Afghans

To: Sen. Kaine, Sen. Warner, Rep. Kiggans

From: A constituent in Virginia Beach, VA

April 18

The decision to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for thousands of Afghans who sought refuge in the U.S. after the chaotic withdrawal in 2021 is deeply concerning. These individuals fled Afghanistan due to the dangerous conditions created by the Taliban's takeover, and deporting them would put their lives at risk. While the administration cites that conditions no longer meet the statutory requirements for TPS designation, the situation in Afghanistan remains precarious with rampant human rights abuses and lack of security, especially for those affiliated with the previous government or U.S. forces. I urge you to reconsider this decision and extend TPS protections for Afghans until the situation stabilizes and their safety can be guaranteed upon return. Deporting these individuals would not only be inhumane but would also undermine U.S. commitments to protecting allies and upholding human rights. A more compassionate approach that prioritizes the well-being of these vulnerable people is needed.
