I am writing to urge you to support defunding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and redirect those funds toward programs that actually keep our communities safe. ICE has repeatedly shown that it operates with inadequate training, weak oversight, and a culture that rewards aggression over judgment. When armed federal agents are placed in communities without sufficient accountability, the result is not safety—it is fear, injury, and, too often, the loss of American lives. No agency that routinely escalates situations through ego, intimidation, and poor decision-making should continue to receive billions of taxpayer dollars. Public safety should be grounded in professionalism, restraint, and respect for human life. Instead, ICE’s enforcement model prioritizes raids and force over due process and community trust. This approach endangers not only immigrants, but neighbors, bystanders, and families who have done nothing wrong. Americans should not be killed or traumatized because federal agents were poorly trained, poorly supervised, or empowered to act without meaningful consequences. We are supposed to care about our neighbors. That principle should guide federal policy, not fear-based politics or performative toughness. Defunding ICE does not mean abandoning border management or the rule of law—it means refusing to bankroll an agency that has proven itself incapable of carrying out its mission without harming the very people it claims to protect. I urge you to take a clear stand: stop funding an agency that puts lives at risk, and invest instead in humane, accountable systems that reflect our values and actually enhance public safety.
