The Trump administration ordered federal prosecutors to stand down on a criminal investigation into Clean Water Act violations by Governor Jim Justice's coal operations — and you need to demand a full accounting of that decision immediately. This isn't a policy disagreement. This is the Office of the Deputy Attorney General killing an active multi-agency investigation involving the EPA, DOJ's Environmental Crimes Section, and the U.S. Attorney's Office of the Western District of Virginia. Rick Mountcastle, a federal prosecutor with 24 years in that district, said he had "never heard of that happening before." Justice is a Republican senator elected in 2024 with Trump's direct endorsement. The conflict of interest here is not subtle. If the administration can shut down a criminal environmental investigation to protect a political ally, no Clean Water Act enforcement is safe.
