Legalize and Regulate Hemp and Cannabis Now

To: Rep. McDowell, Sen. Budd, Sen. Tillis

From: A constituent in Concord, NC

August 15

Legalize and regulate hemp and cannabis. A proper regulatory framework means 21+ ID checks, licensed dispensaries, childproof packaging, and controlled distribution — exactly the kind of consumer protections that the current unregulated market completely lacks. Prohibition doesn't make these products disappear; it just removes every safeguard around them. Hemp is not a dangerous substance. There has never been a recorded fatal overdose from cannabis or hemp — not one. Meanwhile, legal alcohol and prescription opioids kill tens of thousands of people every year with far less regulatory scrutiny than what legalization would impose on cannabis. Keeping hemp and cannabis illegal doesn't protect anyone. It hands the market to unregulated sellers who have zero incentive to check IDs or package products safely. Vote to legalize and regulate. Give this industry the oversight it deserves and take it out of the shadows where no rules apply.
