Halt Politicization of DOJ and Protect Rule of Law

To: Sen. Lee, Sen. Curtis, Rep. Maloy

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

November 4

I am writing to express my deep concern over the alarming politicization of the Department of Justice (DOJ) and to urge you to take immediate action to protect the rule of law in our nation. Recent events have revealed a disturbing pattern of political interference in the DOJ's operations, threatening the very foundations of our justice system. The installation of Lindsey Halligan, a novice prosecutor and former White House lawyer, in a key U.S. Attorney position after forcing out a veteran prosecutor is a clear example of this interference. This appointment, coupled with the filing of charges against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, raises serious questions about the integrity of these prosecutions. The gravity of this situation is underscored by the fact that over 100 former DOJ officials have filed an amicus brief arguing that Comey's prosecution is vindictive and should be dismissed. This unprecedented action by career professionals speaks volumes about the perceived abuse of power. Furthermore, the appointment of Ed Martin, a lawyer with strong MAGA credentials, to head a 'weaponization working group' within the DOJ is deeply troubling. This move, along with public calls for charges against political opponents, suggests a dangerous trend towards using the justice system as a tool for personal vendettas. As a member of Congress, you have the power and responsibility to address this crisis. I urge you to: 1. Launch a thorough investigation into these appointments and prosecutions. 2. Hold oversight hearings to examine the politicization of the DOJ. 3. Introduce legislation to strengthen the independence of the DOJ and protect it from political interference. The long-term damage to our criminal justice system could be severe if these actions are not checked. Our democracy relies on an impartial and independent Department of Justice. As your constituent, I implore you to act swiftly and decisively to halt this erosion of our democratic institutions and restore faith in the rule of law. The integrity of our justice system hangs in the balance. Your action on this matter is not just requested; it is essential for the preservation of our democratic values and the trust of the American people in their government institutions.
