Imminent loss of public land. Oversight. POTUS Antiquities Act.
To: Rep. Beyer
From: A constituent in Arlington, VA
October 25, 2024
I am writing as your Virginia constituent about the urgent threat to federal public lands in Montana's Crazy Mountains. A questionable land swap would give private billionaires 3,435 acres of accessible public land in exchange for inaccessible high-altitude terrain, setting a dangerous precedent for public lands nationwide, including here in Virginia.
Key concerns:
1. Land appraisals hidden until after deal completion
2. Private interests financing government transaction costs
3. Forest Service abandoning public access protection
4. Lack of transparent public process
I request that you:
1. Demand immediate release of land appraisals
2. Call for oversight hearings
3. Investigate NEPA/FLPMA violations
4. Support stronger public lands protections
5. Ensure Forest Service maintains public access
6. Speak with the White House about using the Antiquities Act to designate the Crazy Mountains as a National Monument for immediate protection
As Virginians, we understand protecting national heritage - from the Appalachian Trail to Shenandoah National Park. Like Fort Monroe National Monument, presidential action under the Antiquities Act can preserve vital public lands for future generations. This privatization sets a dangerous precedent that could affect public lands everywhere, including Virginia's cherished outdoor spaces.
Please take action to protect these federal lands that belong to all Americans.
