Vote Against the SAVE Act's Voter Suppression Scheme

To: Sen. Lee, Rep. Maloy, Sen. Curtis

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

February 7

I urge you to oppose the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act, which House leadership plans to bring to a vote next week. This is voter suppression, plain and simple. This legislation is designed to disenfranchise millions of eligible American citizens under the false pretense of election security. The SAVE Act would strip voting rights from approximately 21 million Americans by requiring proof of citizenship documentation that millions of citizens do not possess. Voters would need passports or original birth certificates at polling places, documents that about half of Americans lack. Only five states issue enhanced driver licenses that meet the bill's requirements. Married women who changed their names would face additional documentation hurdles. These are not reasonable safeguards. They are deliberate barriers constructed to prevent Americans from exercising their constitutional right to vote. The supposed problem this bill addresses does not exist. Noncitizen voting is a crime that is easily detected and prosecuted, and comprehensive voter roll reviews by Republican election administrators have confirmed it is exceedingly rare. This legislation manufactures a crisis to justify systematic disenfranchisement. One historian called an earlier, less restrictive version of this bill the most extraordinary attack on voting rights in American history. The current version is even more extreme. Fair Elections Center President Rebekah Caruthers has documented that each new voting barrier causes one to three percent of eligible voters to give up. That is the goal here. This is voter suppression masquerading as election integrity. The timing reveals the true intent. Recent White House statements about interfering with 2026 midterm elections and deploying ICE agents to polling places show this is part of a coordinated effort to intimidate and exclude voters. The aggressive voter roll purges mandated by this bill will improperly cancel thousands of legitimate registrations, just as similar purges have done historically. I ask you to vote against the SAVE America Act and publicly call out this legislation for what it is: an attempt to suppress the votes of millions of eligible American citizens.
