Subject: Opposition to HCR 3020 – Acknowledging the Kingship of Jesus Christ   Dear Representative,   I am writing to express my strong opposition to North Dakota House Concurrent Resolution 3020, which seeks to acknowledge the "Kingship of Jesus Christ." This resolution directly violates the principles of religious freedom enshrined in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and contradicts the clear intentions of our Founding Fathers regarding the separation of church and state. The United States was founded on the principle of religious liberty, which is explicitly protected in the First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." By endorsing a specific religious belief, HCR 3020 threatens this fundamental protection and sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the religious pluralism that defines our nation. Our Founding Fathers were clear in their intent to keep government free from religious entanglement. Furthermore, the Treaty of Tripoli, unanimously ratified by the Senate in 1797 and signed by President John Adams, explicitly states in Article 11, "The Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion." This treaty, an official act of the U.S. government, reaffirms that our nation was never intended to be bound to any specific religious doctrine. From official treaties and constitutional principles to personal writings, the Founding Fathers consistently rejected the idea that the United States was established as a Christian nation. Instead, they built a government rooted in religious neutrality, ensuring freedom for people of all faiths (or no faith) without state endorsement of any religion. HCR 3020 is not only unconstitutional but also divisive. I urge you to oppose this resolution and reaffirm our nation’s commitment to religious liberty for all Americans, regardless of their faith or beliefs.   Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response. Sincerely,  A Concerned North Dakota Citizen
