Arizona’s Responsibility to Protect Children from Federal Budget Shifts

To: Sen. Bolick, Rep. Wilmeth, Gov. Hobbs, Rep. Simacek

I am writing to urge Arizona’s leadership to take proactive measures in safeguarding our children from the potential consequences of federal policy changes that could undermine their well-being. Recent discussions in Washington suggest adjustments to SNAP work requirements, specifically removing the automatic dependent status of children aged seven and older, which could increase financial hardship for families and raise concerns about child labor. I want to be clear—this is not an argument against parents working. However, the cost of child care versus income is becoming an increasingly urgent concern, especially for families in entry-level jobs or lower-income brackets. Many parents want to work but simply cannot afford child care, which leaves them facing impossible decisions about how to provide for their children while ensuring their safety and education. As a resident of Arizona, I believe our state must take direct action to ensure that children between the ages of seven and sixteen are protected and prioritized in educational settings, rather than being placed in situations where financial pressures push them into premature labor participation. Children should be students first—education must be the cornerstone of their development, with all other activities remaining extracurricular in nature. Arizona should consider developing a formal plan to support families and ensure that no child is forced into labor due to federal budget decisions. Potential state-level responses could include: - Strengthening child labor protections to ensure that federal policy changes do not lead to exploitative work practices. - Expanding state-funded childcare and after-school programs for families impacted by stricter work requirements. - Passing a resolution reaffirming Arizona’s commitment to keeping children in school and safeguarding them from financial exploitation. Families should not be forced into impossible choices due to policies that do not account for real-life parenting challenges. Arizona has the ability—and the responsibility—to step up and lead on this issue. I respectfully ask for your position on this matter and whether Arizona will take proactive steps to protect its children. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your response.
