Defund ICE and Redirect Resources to Humane Immigration Solutions
To: Sen. Lee, Sen. Curtis, Rep. Maloy
From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT
April 24
I'm asking you to vote against any appropriations that fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement and to support legislation that redirects those resources toward humane immigration processing.
ICE has proven itself an agency beyond reform. The pattern of family separations, deaths in detention, and raids that tear apart communities shows that more funding won't fix a broken mission. We're spending billions on an enforcement apparatus that makes us less safe, not more. That money could fund immigration judges to clear the backlog, legal representation for asylum seekers, and community-based alternatives to detention that cost a fraction of what we spend on cages.
Every budget is a statement of values. Continuing to fund ICE at current levels tells immigrant families in our district that cruelty is policy. I want you to be on record supporting a different approach: one that treats people seeking safety with dignity and invests in solutions that actually work.
