“The SAVE Act Breaks the Law and Breaks Faith With the American People”

To: Sen. Ernst, Sen. Grassley

From: A verified voter in Des Moines, IA

February 26

I am urging you to vote NO on the SAVE Act — not only because it is harmful, but because it may well be unlawful. The United States Constitution guarantees every eligible citizen the right to vote. The National Voter Registration Act already requires applicants to affirm their citizenship under penalty of perjury and federal law. The SAVE Act does not strengthen these protections — it duplicates and distorts them, adding bureaucratic barriers that have no legal justification and serve no legitimate purpose. When government creates unnecessary obstacles to a constitutionally protected right, it does not inspire confidence — it breeds suspicion. When millions of eligible Americans are turned away from the ballot box by red tape, they do not trust the process more — they trust it less. The very people this bill claims to protect will watch their neighbors, their parents, and their children be denied the right to vote, and they will rightfully ask — who is this government really serving? Democracy only works when the people believe in it. Legislation like the SAVE Act does not strengthen that belief — it erodes it. It sends a message that their government views them not as citizens to be served, but as suspects to be screened. Senator, Americans are already deeply skeptical of their institutions. We do not need laws that deepen that divide. We need leaders with the courage to protect our rights, not restrict them. Vote NO on the SAVE Act. Uphold the Constitution. Restore trust in our democracy.
