Protect civil liberties and avoid militarization of protest response

To: Rep. McGuire, Sen. Warner, Sen. Kaine

From: A constituent in Crozet, VA

June 12

The use of military force against peaceful protesters exercising their constitutional rights is a severe overstep and an alarming violation of civil liberties. Deploying the National Guard or active-duty military to suppress dissent sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the foundations of democracy! There must be a de-escalation of force and a commitment to upholding the rights to free speech and assembly. Militarized responses only breed further unrest and erode public trust in institutions. Leaders should engage in dialogue, address grievances through proper channels, and allow protests to proceed lawfully. Resorting to martial law tactics against one's own citizens is unacceptable in a free society!
