I am seriously concerned about the surprise conditions attached to the Helene Relief Bill. Forgive me for not having time to get all the bill info in hand before I write this, but I was following Laura Leslie’s report at WRAL when I learned of this. This is the sort of shenanigan that gives politics a bad name.
Sometimes there are two perspectives on matters, but other times it’s just about a raw power move. If the GOP can’t win without messing with the rules of fair elections, or fund a disaster recovery without changing the structure of governance when they lose, then it’s time to take their red ball and go home.
The rule I learned to use growing up is to always try on the action both ways. Would it be fair and ethical if it applied to me and to the other side? Considering that the entire job of the NCGA is to serve the citizens of the state of NC, then I want to call out this bill as being self-serving, partisan, and in ridiculously bad faith.
Perhaps it is time to go back to the School of Government for a refresher course. Thank you to my legislators for voting NO on this package.
