Education and civil rights protections

To: Gov. Ferguson, Rep. Donaghy, Rep. Berg, Sen. Lovick

From: A constituent in Mill Creek, WA

March 18

The rights of transgender students must be upheld and protected. SB 5179 aims to establish a complaint process to address willful noncompliance with state education laws, including those safeguarding the rights and well-being of transgender youth in schools. Transgender students face disproportionate rates of harassment, discrimination, and victimization, which can negatively impact their mental health, academic performance, and overall development. Ensuring schools comply with laws prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity or expression is crucial for creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students. A robust complaint process would empower families and advocates to hold schools accountable for violations, ultimately upholding the dignity and rights of transgender students. For these reasons, I urge your support for SB 5179 to protect some of our most vulnerable youth.
