I am deeply concerned about the Social Security Administration’s new policy, effective April 14, which eliminates phone applications for retirement and survivor benefits. This change will force millions of Americans—especially seniors, people with disabilities, and bereaved families—to travel long distances or navigate complex online systems to access services.
The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimates that up to six million seniors will be burdened by this requirement, with many facing a 45-mile trip to the nearest SSA office. Additionally, many seniors lack internet access or the skills to complete online applications, leaving them without options. The lengthy wait times for in-person appointments—sometimes over 28 days—further exacerbate this problem.
I urge you to advocate for policies that ensure all Americans can access Social Security benefits easily, whether by phone, online, or in person. Please work to restore phone applications and improve the accessibility of in-person services.
Thank you for your attention to this critical issue.
