Protect Federal Retirees — Don’t Eliminate the SRS
I’m writing to strongly oppose the harmful cuts to federal retirement benefits included in the House-passed “One Big Beautiful Bill” — especially the proposed elimination of the FERS Special Retirement Supplement (SRS).
The SRS is not a luxury. It’s a critical bridge for federal workers who retire before age 62 and aren’t yet eligible for Social Security. Eliminating this supplement would break faith with millions of career civil servants who have earned this benefit through decades of service.
While the bill exempts law enforcement, firefighters, and air traffic controllers, it completely disregards the needs of countless other federal employees who planned responsibly based on promises made by their employer — the U.S. government.
This provision alone could upend the financial security of middle-income retirees and force thousands to delay retirement or suffer real hardship. It is cruel, unnecessary, and unjustified.
I also urge you to resist any future efforts to revive:
• The “high-3 to high-5” annuity change,
• Mandatory 4.4% FERS contribution increases for all employees,
• And the false choice between civil service protections and at-will employment with adjusted benefits.
These measures would destabilize the entire federal workforce, making government service less competitive, less fair, and less secure.
After a lifetime of service, federal workers deserve the retirement they earned — not benefit cuts dressed up as deficit reduction.
Please stand up for retirees. Reject these cuts. Protect the SRS. Keep your promises.
