The SAVE Act poses a grave threat to the fundamental right to vote by imposing burdensome and unnecessary requirements for voter registration. Mandating that all potential voters provide documentation like passports or birth certificates in person would create substantial barriers, disenfranchising millions of eligible citizens across the country. This draconian measure disproportionately impacts marginalized communities like women who have changed their names after marriage, trans individuals struggling to update identification documents, people of color, young voters, and those without easy access to such paperwork. Rather than promoting election integrity as claimed, the SAVE Act undermines it by obstructing the ability of lawful voters to exercise their constitutional rights. There already exist robust safeguards against voter fraud, rendering this legislation unnecessary and discriminatory. A vibrant democracy depends on removing obstacles to voter participation, not erecting new ones that suppress the voices of vulnerable populations. I urge you to reject this undemocratic bill that runs counter to the principles of equal access and representation that are the bedrock of American democracy. Protecting and expanding voting rights must be the priority to uphold our nation's core values and promise of government of, by, and for the people. The SAVE Act represents a dangerous step backward that cannot be tolerated.
