Political lying should have legal consequences

I am writing as a concerned constituent to urge Congress to strengthen protections for the rule of law, constitutional government, individual rights, and equal treatment under the law. Recent events have highlighted vulnerabilities in our democratic system when elected officials, government agencies, or other powerful institutions operate without sufficient accountability. Regardless of political party, Americans deserve a government that is transparent, respects constitutional limits, protects due process, and remains accountable to the people it serves. I respectfully ask Congress to consider legislation that: 1. Protects Judicial Independence • Prevent retaliation against judges, courts, attorneys, and law firms based on their participation in lawful proceedings. • Ensure access to justice remains free from political intimidation or government coercion. 2. Strengthens Due Process Protections • Reinforce statutory protections guaranteeing hearings, judicial review, and access to counsel before government action deprives individuals of liberty, property, or legal status. • Increase transparency and reporting requirements when executive agencies exercise extraordinary powers affecting constitutional rights. 3. Protects Independent Law Enforcement, Civil Servants, and Whistleblowers • Establish safeguards against politically motivated retaliation directed at career prosecutors, investigators, inspectors general, and civil servants. • Expand whistleblower protections for government employees who disclose misconduct, abuse of authority, or violations of law. 4. Improves Election Integrity and Public Trust • Support bipartisan measures that improve election transparency, security, and voter confidence. • Require timely disclosure and oversight regarding significant allegations affecting election administration and public confidence in democratic institutions. 5. Increases Accountability for Abuse of Public Office • Strengthen ethics laws and congressional oversight mechanisms. • Clarify standards governing misuse of government resources for personal, political, or retaliatory purposes. • Review whether existing statutes adequately deter conduct by public officials that undermines democratic institutions or public trust. 6. Combats Disinformation While Protecting Free Speech • Promote transparency regarding foreign influence operations, coordinated disinformation campaigns, and AI-generated political content. • Encourage civic education and media literacy programs that help citizens evaluate factual claims while fully preserving First Amendment rights. 7. Protect Americans from Political Discrimination • Consider extending civil rights protections against discrimination based upon lawful political affiliation and political belief. • Americans should not face adverse treatment by government agencies, employers receiving federal funds, financial institutions, educational institutions, or public accommodations solely because they identify as Republican, Democrat, Independent, Libertarian, Green Party, conservative, liberal, progressive, moderate, or any other lawful political viewpoint. • Congress should ensure that no federal agency, federal employee acting in an official capacity, federal contractor, or recipient of federal funding may discriminate against an individual based solely on lawful political affiliation, party registration, political viewpoint, or participation in lawful political activity. Our nation has become increasingly polarized. Americans across the political spectrum have expressed concerns about being unfairly targeted, excluded, stereotyped, or denied opportunities because of their political beliefs. While the First Amendment must continue to protect robust political debate—including criticism of political parties, elected officials, and public policies—citizens should be protected from unequal treatment under the law because of their lawful political views. The protection of political diversity is essential to preserving a healthy constitutional republic. Americans should be free to participate in our democracy without fear that their political beliefs will subject them to discrimination, retaliation, or unequal treatment. The Constitution depends not only on written laws but also on public trust that government officials will respect those laws. Congress has both the authority and responsibility to reinforce democratic guardrails, protect constitutional rights, and ensure equal treatment for all Americans regardless of political affiliation. I respectfully ask you to support legislation that strengthens accountability, protects constitutional liberties, preserves democratic institutions, and safeguards Americans from political discrimination. Thank you for your service and for considering my views.
