Place strong restrictions on ICE before funding DHS. No half-measures.

To: Sen. Warner, Sen. Kaine

From: A verified voter in Charlottesville, VA

February 5

Over the last few weeks I’ve written you almost daily to share several important conditions that must be met before DHS receives any more funding — agents must not undertake warrantless searches; must not use racial profiling; must not pick up suspected undocumented people from schools, hospitals, courts, or places of worship; must not carry lethal weapons; and must not conceal their identities. Today I want to add an increasingly important condition: Failure to obey any court order will immediately terminate all funding for ICE or the Border Patrol. Apparently many Republicans are against this because they don’t want to tie ICE’s or Border Patrol’s hands with the pesky responsibility of following court orders. Please inform your colleagues across the aisle who are objecting to this that obeying court orders is part of the job (and Constitutional responsibility) of *every* public official — whether an agent of ICE or Border Patrol, or a member of Congress. We have a moment of leverage and you MUST use it to rein in ICE and protect your constituents.
