As your constituent, I am writing to urge your strong support for the Keep Illegal Handguns Out of the Mail Act and to express serious concern regarding proposed changes to United States Postal Service regulations that would weaken longstanding federal restrictions on mailing handguns.
For nearly a century, federal law has recognized the serious public safety risks associated with the distribution of concealable firearms through the mail. The 1927 federal prohibition on mailing handguns was enacted to limit unregulated access to these weapons and to reduce their use in crime. This policy has served as a critical safeguard by ensuring that handgun transactions remain subject to appropriate oversight and accountability.
The proposed USPS regulatory changes would undermine this longstanding framework by expanding the circumstances under which handguns may be shipped through the mail. Such changes risk creating new pathways for illegal trafficking, complicating enforcement efforts, and increasing the likelihood that firearms fall into the wrong hands. At a time when communities across the country continue to grapple with gun violence, weakening these protections would move us in the wrong direction.
The Keep Illegal Handguns Out of the Mail Act represents a necessary and prudent step to reinforce existing law, close potential loopholes, and ensure that the postal system is not used to facilitate unlawful firearm distribution. Upholding strict controls on the mailing of handguns is consistent with both public safety priorities and the original intent of federal law.
I respectfully urge you to support this legislation and to oppose any administrative or regulatory actions that would erode these protections. Thank you for your attention to this important matter and for your service to our community
